Words Mist the Air

January 29, 2016

The little room at Dog-Eared Pages Bookstore was packed last night. A space full of visual art and vibrant words. I read three poems from Porcelain with an intro about Cinthia Albers the creator of the verses and soon-to-be bride. It was a great evening.

Red Ribbon Caregiver Book Highly Recommended

August 11, 2015

The Wishing Shelf Book Awards gave “More Than I Could Ever Know: How I Survived Caregiving” four stars.  “Full of wisdom and practical help for the caregiver. A RED RIBBON WINNER and highly recommended” they said, this group of British readers.Red_Ribbon_-_123rf“A perfect book for anybody who is a caregiver. I liked the style very much and the message was powerful and thoughtful” commented a 34-year-old female reader.

“A short read but, nevertheless, very powerful stuff. I liked the carousel analogy and the key tips at the end. There’s a lot of wisdom in here and practical help for any caregiver. The One Widow Two Lists chapter was particularly well done,” said a female reader, aged 51.

Proactive Caregiving (While You Still Can Ask For Help)

March 29, 2015

toothacheCaregivers never want to “bother anyone” because it’s “not bad enough yet.”

I hear this so many times in the group that I facilitate that I took the challenge last week.

“So,” I said after hearing an account of falling in which the caregiver and her husband with advanced Alzheimer’s  both sustained bruises and bloody limbs.  He fell into the front flowerbed and could not get up by himself.  She reached down to hoist him up and ended up catapulted against a concrete wall when he proved too heavy for her to lift.

“If you had a sore tooth, you would wait until there was pus coming out of your gums and you were delirious with throbbing pain before you called the dentist?”  There was silence from the eight caregivers in my living room.  I continued, “You know it isn’t going to get any better by itself.”

It’s hard to ask for help.  I know it so well.  But when a loved one becomes more and more unable to help with transfers, when he is too weak and falls often, his caregiver is risking her own good health if she doesn’t make arrangements for assistance.

Open Mic Caregiver Story So Bright

A great turnout at Dog-Eared Pages last night.  We even had stand-up for comic relief between two-hanky readings.  The mix of visual arts, poetry, sci-fi and singing made for a great evening.  This bookstore alcove draws great creativity.  A special “bravo” for the author of “Shades of Black and Blue.”
