Kids Write About Peace

April 24, 2016

What does a child know about peace? Or poetry? Sixty students wowed us with their innocent verses while 250 people watched. This is not childish babble.  They wrote haikus and sistenas! Haiku, yes, well, they are short and could be called easy.  But sistena–that complex form with dramatic intricate stanza repetition! I’ve never written one in my entire poet career.

The Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Poem Competition nurtures a steady flow of budding Hawaiian poets. On April 22, we enjoyed hearing Maui island winners speak their poems and receive their prizes.  The poetry contest celebrates and awards winners on all islands. I can hardly wait until next year.
